Pengertian adverbial clause yakni, adverb yang berarti keterangan, dan clause yang berarti klausa atau kalimat.
Adverbial clause dalam pengertian diatas berarti berbagai kata keterangan yang digunakan untuk merangkai suatu kalimat keterangan. Sebuah klausa adverbial dimulai dengan hubungannya subordinatif (seperti jika, kapan,karena, atau meskipun) dan termasuk subjek dan predikat.
Klausa adverbial digunakan untuk mengubah verb (kata kerja), dengan menambahkan detail mengenai alasan (reason), waktu (time), konsesi (concession), cara (manner), atau kondisi (conditional), seperti yang digambarkan di bawah ini.
a. Reason
Because Marianne loved Willoughby, she refused to believe that he had deserted her.
b. Time
When Fanny returned, she found Tom Bertram very ill.
c. Concession
Although Mr D'Arcy disliked Mrs Bennet he married Elizabeth.
d. Manner
Henry changed his plans as the mood took him.
e. Condition
If Emma had left Hartfield, Mr Woodhouse would have been unhappy.
Cara mengenali adverbial clause dengan 3 ciri khasnya:
- Pertama, akan berisi subjek dan kata kerja (verb).
- Anda juga akan menemukan subordinate conjunction atau konjungsi subordinatif.
- Akhirnya, Anda akan melihat bahwa klausul tersebut menjawab salah satu dari tiga pertanyaan adverbia: Bagaimana? Kapan? atau Mengapa?
- Tommy scrubbed the bathroom tile until his arms ached. How did Tommy scrub? Until his arms ached, an adverb clause.
- Josephine's three cats bolted from the driveway once they saw her car turn the corner. When did the cats bolt? Once they saw her car turn the corner, an adverb clause.
- After her appointment at the orthodontist, Danielle cooked eggs for dinner because she could easily chew an omelet. Why did Danielle cook eggs? Because she could easily chew an omelet, an adverb clause.
